Access various Prince George’s County public records for free, either online and in person. The type of public documents you can access include vital records (marriage, divorce, birth and death), court cases, property, criminal (warrants, arrests, probation) and prisoner information.

Government agencies are required to provide this information under the Freedom of Information Act and Maryland’s Public Information Act. However, there are no requirements on how government agencies provide these records, and there are several exceptions to when a document must be made available to the public.

While arrest information provides preliminary data on an arrestee’s charges, the criminal record will provide a detailed accounting of a defendant’s past and present record in Prince George’s County. You can perform a free criminal record check to view general information or to obtain specific data such as sentencing information (e.g., incarceration or probation) and whether an individual has any warrants for their arrest.

How To Verify if Someone Has a History of Crime in Prince George’s County via the Maryland Judiciary Case Search Tool
A searcher can perform a Prince George’s County case search of criminal records using Maryland’s Unified Case Search Tool.4
Criminal records can be searched by either case number or the individual’s name. If you do not have the case number, follow the steps outlined below for submitting a search inquiry.
First, select “Criminal” for the case type. Next, you have the option of selecting a particular court. For your broadest search, you can select all courts. However, if you know you are looking up a particular type of case, you can narrow your search results to a specific court. Here is what each Prince George’s County Court handles:
District Court – Misdemeanor criminal cases (e.g., petty theft, stalking, harassment) and violations of motor vehicle laws.
Circuit Court – Handles serious criminal matters called felonies; these cases involve prison time and include crimes such as murder, burglary, arson, etc. The Circuit Court also handles matters that have been appealed from the District Court.
Once you select your court, select “Prince George” as the county. A searcher’s last option is to include a date range for when the criminal case was filed. After you have made all selections, you can perform your search.
The summary results will provide a searcher with the case number, name, date of birth and filing date. This information should be enough to determine which criminal record you are searching for. You can click on the defendant’s case number to access the full criminal history.
The criminal case record is separated into several sections that can provide a searcher with valuable information, which can also assist if someone decides to perform a more detailed search at the courthouse (more on that in the next section). Here is a summary of the useful data each section can provide a searcher:
Case Information: This provides a case summary and includes reference information that can help further your search. For instance, you can view the complaint number, lower court case number (if applicable), incident date and the date the case was filed.
Defendant Information: Here, you can get basic information about the defendant, including their address.
Charge & Disposition Information: Use this section to review detailed information about the charges brought against a defendant. In this section, you can view the defendant’s plea, the disposition of the case and sentence information. Sentence information includes the type of sentence, start date and length.
Related Person Information: View this section to get a summary of people involved in the case, from the attorneys who handled the case to the police officers involved in the arrest.
Event History Information: This section will provide a list of the type of event, date and summary for every court date, hearing or filing in a particular criminal case.
Note: This search tool indicates that certain criminal record information may not be provided for legal or practical reasons. See below for searching criminal records at the courthouse.

While online options may be the most convenient, you might be able to conduct a more thorough search of an individual’s criminal history by viewing Prince George’s County judicial records at the courthouse.
Often, it’s not practical for a government agency to provide the full criminal record electronically. For instance, while an online criminal record allows you to see a summary of events, it does not provide the actual filings or what specifically happened.
To search criminal records at the courthouse, remember the district court primarily handles misdemeanors while the circuit court handles felonies and appeals from the district court.
For the Prince George’s County Circuit Court, consider starting your search by contacting the Clerk of Court.5 You can contact the Clerk of the Circuit Court by phone at 301-952-3318 or by email at [email protected]. They are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

How To Perform a Background Check in Prince George’s County
A professional background check report is a valuable and necessary tool in many situations.
If you want to learn more about a person, you typically do not need a professional background check. You can get that information by conducting your own personal background check, which is just searching records using the steps outlined in this article.
However, there are many situations in which you need an official background check report. For instance, a potential employer or landlord may require it as part of one’s application. Or you may need one if you are in the process of adopting a child.
There are also many state and federal laws that require a background check. For instance, employees or volunteers working with the elderly and children are required to get a background check. These are some of many examples in which a person may need a professional background check report.
There are no agencies at the Prince George’s County level that provide background checks. However, a person can request a background check through Maryland’s Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services. Background checks are provided through their Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS).
The CJIS requires a person to provide their fingerprints. For Maryland residents, they can go to any of the state’s authorized fingerprint service locations. Out-of-state residents will have to submit a fingerprint card, which can be requested by calling the CJIS by phone at 410-764-4501 or by submitting a Fingerprint Card Order Form to the address below:
Criminal Justice Information System
P.O. Box 32708
Pikesville, MD 21282
A completed fingerprint card can then be sent to the above address with the required fee. A background check will typically be processed between 10 to 15 days from the receipt of an individual’s fingerprints.
The fees for a background check vary depending on the party requesting the information (e.g., agency, person) and type (e.g., Maryland state, FBI). A person requesting a state background check by mail is charged $18.00 and $38.00 for in-person services.
The cost goes up for full background checks, which includes the FBI. A request by an authorized agency costs $31.25 for mail-in requests and $51.25 to make a request in person.
Note: If you are out of state, you cannot provide a fingerprint card from another state or the FBI. It must be the one provided by Maryland’s Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services.

People search for Prince George’s County vital records for a variety of reasons. For some, they just want to learn more about a person in their life, or they are performing a genealogy search to trace their family’s history.
However, in other situations, a person needs more than just to satisfy their curiosity. People often need a certified copy of a vital record to satisfy a requirement for a request they are making. Here are some examples:

Certain vital records (depending on type and age) are restricted from public access. Follow the steps below to search and access available vital records.

The marriage record provides both parties’ names, the date of their marriage and the certificate number. If a person needs a certified copy of a marriage record, they can use this information to make a request.
While you can view their detailed breakdown of available records, here is a brief rundown of the primary Prince George’s County marriage records you can view with their archives: 1951 to 2011 marriage indexes; and 1914 to 1951 marriage certificates. Prior to that, they have various marriage licenses and records dating all the way back to 1777.

Then, “select Prince George” under the county option, and if you have an idea of when the divorce occurred, you can set a filing date range. You can now view your search results. Depending on how many results you have, you can look at the case type, which will indicate if it is a divorce record. When you click on the case number, you can access further information about the party’s divorce.
At the very top of the record, you can get information on when the petition was filed and the divorce granted. A detailed review of the record will provide information on every event that occurred in the case from the marital settlement agreement to any related issues (e.g., custody of children).

Utilizing Prince George’s County Public Records Ethically & Understanding Citizens’ Rights
You now have the tools to conduct a free public records search to obtain a wealth of information. Before you start your search for public records in Prince George’s County, it is essential to understand one’s rights and responsibilities.
What those rights and responsibilities are depends on how you plan to use these public records, personally or professionally.
Personal use is an informal search of public records to learn more about someone, whoever they are. For instance, if you just want to see if a neighbor was arrested or check if someone is married to satisfy your curiosity, this would be considered a personal use of public records.
For personal use, you can search the records of anyone at any time for any non-professional reason without asking for the individual’s consent. Just make sure that you do not construe these broad rights as a license to commit a criminal act with these public records. Avoid using public records for harassment, stalking or any other type of criminal behavior.
If you are looking for information you cannot find, you also have the option to submit a FOIA request with the government agency that is the custodian of that record. There is no specific form needed to make this request, and the government agency must be responsive to any inquiry. If a document contains public and exempt information, the public record will be redacted to remove exempt information.
Professional use is a broad category that involves a search of public records for a particular legal or business reason or to request some privilege.
An example of a legal reason would be a state law that requires individuals employed or volunteering to work with children to undergo a background check. A business example is an employer or landlord researching a person’s public record to see if they were honest with the information they provided with their application.
An example of a privilege that would require a professional examination of public records would be a request for a firearm’s license or adoption.
With professional use come the following responsibilities:
Consent & Notice: When conducting a professional background check, you are required to receive consent prior to performing your search. In addition, you will need to provide notice if you reject a request or take adverse action based on a review of public records. Failure to do either can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Transparency for Creditworthiness Inquiries: The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires that an individual being searched for creditworthiness receive an appropriate level of transparency.19 This includes being able to know what is in your file and be informed if information in your file was used adversely. In addition, a person can challenge any information if they believe it is inaccurate, outdated or incomplete.
Avoid Discrimination: Avoid using public records to take any sort of discriminatory action against a protected class or because of someone’s criminal or arrest records. Discriminatory action can be filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) through their online portal.20
Through the agencies outlined in this resource, you can search nearly anything on anyone but always be sure to use Prince George’s County public records responsibly and in accordance with local, state and federal laws; to conduct a broader statewide lookup, check out the Maryland public information search resource.
